Rheydt Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof Rheydt)
In 2016, Mönchengladbach city administration purchased the main station building of Hauptbahnhof Rheydt, with a gross floor area of 4,000 to 5,000 m², from Deutsche Bahn: the objective was to redevelop the station building and its surroundings. The station is especially important as an entry point to the centre of Rheydt. As a key element in urban development plans, it is to revitalise the centre of Rheydt and to strengthen this district of the city.
The dilapidated reception building has been demolished to make way for a modern police station, as well as commercial and office spaces, and underground parking spaces. In a two-stage competition, the concept and design of BRINGSARCHITEKTEN (see rendering above) won. It features a three-storey structure with a mezzanine floor allowing barrier-free central access to the platforms and the main station concourse. Both the binding space allocation programme for the police station and the integration of the air taxi hub on the roof of the building are to be realized. Well-proportioned flexibly-designed space for offices and services together with a high-quality, partially-landscaped inner courtyard will give the entire development an attractive flair.
The structural framework of the new building has been completed, and a topping-out ceremony was celebrated in April 2023. The completion and occupancy are scheduled for the first half of 2024.
