Rheydt Central Station (Hauptbahnhof Rheydt)
In 2016, Mönchengladbach city administration purchased the main station building of Hauptbahnhof Rheydt, with a gross floor area of 4,000 to 5,000 m², from Deutsche Bahn: the objective was to redevelop the station building and its surroundings. As a key element in urban development plans, it is to revitalise the centre of Rheydt and to strengthen this district of the city.
The new building was officially opened in mid-2024. In just three years and without interrupting rail operations, EWMG has transformed the unattractive and dilapidated Rheydt main station into a prestigious gateway for Rheydt and a flagship for the entire city. The building sets standards – with functional and attractive architecture as well as innovative measures for more sustainability in construction. 10,000 plants in 200 square meters of green façade and 1,340 cubic meters of green roof ensure a better microclimate and flood protection. The new police station also opened its 1,700 square meter section of the building in 2024.
