Through EWMG, the city of Mönchengladbach has acquired nearly 55 percent of the shares of Mönchengladbach’s Airport, making it the majority owner.

From general aviation to zero-emission aviation, the Mönchengladbach Airport (MGL) is unleashing its potential. With nearly 50,000 flight movements per year, MGL is one of the most important general aviation airports in Germany. With around 45 companies and authorities employing over 770 people, Mönchengladbach Airport is also a crucial economic location.

Business aviation values its central location, weather-independent accessibility, and swift handling. Instrument flight training is offered by several flight schools here. Regional aircraft and business jets from around the world come to Mönchengladbach for maintenance. Private pilots find a home for their aircraft in the hangars. Moreover, the high-performance aviation cluster continues to develop and is reinforced by innovative projects such as the development of new flight systems.

In a time when aviation is being reimagined, the airport is positioning itself as an innovation center and real-world laboratory. MGL is dedicated to researching sustainable and future-oriented concepts in aviation and aligning the airport with new technologies. Procedures are being developed and thoroughly tested to ensure manned and unmanned aircraft can interact undisturbed in regular operations, within a complex airspace and with the necessary ground processes and systems.

The MGL is also leading the way as an innovation airport and “smart airport” in major future topics such as climate protection and digitalization. Alternative propulsion technologies in aviation are a particular focus. Initial test flights with an electric aircraft have demonstrated the growing potential, especially in pilot training. With its own electric charger powered by green photovoltaic energy, the MGL is making a significant contribution to expanding North Rhine-Westphalia as a hub for green mobility and electric flight.
