The new Head of Building Claudia Schwan-Schmitz is also the new Managing Director of EWMG. She succeeds Dr. Gregor Bonin in this role. The Supervisory Board and shareholders’ meeting officially appointed Schwan-Schmitz at their meetings on December 14.
The interfaces between EWMG and the building department are many and varied, and projects can only be realized in close cooperation. Urban development needs space. This is why the organizational link between the municipal development company and Department VI has traditionally been very close. Like her predecessors in the administration, Claudia Schwan-Schmitz will also become Managing Director of EWMG alongside Dr. Ulrich Schückhaus as Chairman of the Management Board. She will take up her position on January 1, 2024. “I am looking forward to working with Ms. Schwan-Schmitz and am excited about the impetus she will provide in Mönchengladbach and for EWMG,” says Dr. Ulrich Schückhaus, Chairman of the EWMG Management Board.
Claudia Schwan-Schmitz has already been working as the new Head of Planning, Construction, Mobility and Environment in Mönchengladbach since November. “As Technical Councillor for Mönchengladbach, my aim is to actively shape and develop the city. Thanks to my work in the management of the development company, I have the opportunity to accompany and help steer many topics beyond the groundwork to their concrete implementation. I am very excited about this and look forward to working with Dr. Schückhaus and all my colleagues at EWMG,” says the new EWMG Managing Director.
An architect with a degree in urban planning, she brings a wealth of experience and qualifications to her new position. She has been Head of Strategic Urban Development since August 2017 and Technical Councillor for the district town of Bergheim in the Rhine-Erft district since June 2020, where she had a similar area of responsibility to the one she now has in Mönchengladbach. Another thing they have in common is that both municipalities are directly affected by structural change in the Rhenish mining area. “Her proven expertise in the area of structural change and her enthusiasm for sustainable and innovative urban development concepts make her the ideal candidate for Mönchengladbach and EWMG,” says Janann Safi, Chairman of the EWMG Supervisory Board.
Schwan-Schmitz is taking up the post in difficult times for the real estate sector. The aim is to drive projects forward, convince new players of Mönchengladbach and unite various interest groups.
